What these numbers tell you

These are partial observations of this instance. They are not a count of people, installations or projects that depend on the service.

Requests include more than people

Previews, bots and retries can count. Browser, CDN and GitHub image-cache hits never reach this server. Self-hosted opt-outs, disabled periods and failed writes can reduce coverage.

Repositories are an estimate

Referers may be absent or spoofed. Repository existence and visibility are not verified. Distinct identifiers use HyperLogLog, with about 0.81% standard error.

Counting and showcasing

Official hosting counts aggregate usage. The export prompt only asks about public showcasing: every exported design is saved for the configured retention period. Accepting also adds a public preview until you withdraw the showcase or an operator removes it. Withdrawing a showcase does not delete the saved export before its retention period ends.

Self-hosted instances keep optional tracking and do not enable showcasing by default. Their banner checkbox, stats=false, Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control can exclude requests. These opt-outs do not disable official aggregate counting.

Statistics contain daily counts and a sketch of hashed repository identifiers, without IPs, cookies or visitor IDs. Daily keys expire seven days after their last write. Hosting providers may keep separate access logs.

GitHub Repo Banner is open source. Generated banner URLs are public, but only voluntarily submitted designs appear in the showcase.
